The Bharathiar University was established at Coimbatore by the Government of Tamilnadu in February 1982 under the Bharathiar University Act, 1981 (Act 1 of 1982). The erstwhile Postgraduate Centre of the University of Madras formed the core of the Bharathiar University, which was functioning at Coimbatore before 1982. University Grants Commission (UGC) recognized Bharathiar University in 1985 for grants.

The University has 39 Departments, offering 54 post-graduate programs besides offering M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs. The University is an affiliating University. The jurisdiction of the University covers the districts of Coimbatore, Erode, Tirupur, and The Niligiris with 133 affiliated colleges.

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council have accredited the University with an ‘A’ Grade in the third cycle assessment. Bharathiar University is marching towards becoming a World Class University by garnering ranking in the International arena. Times Higher Education Young Universities World Ranking ranked our University in the range of 201 to 250. We stand at 13th rank under the category of University and 21st among the top 100 institutions in the MoE’s National Institute Ranking Framework’s (NIRF) ranking. In 2021, Bharathiar University secured a ranking in the range of 801-1000 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

The state-of-the-art facilities available for faculty members and scholars nurture a culture of research in cutting-edge areas. Industry infusion into the curriculum is given prominence by involving industry experts - R&D managers, product development managers, technical managers in the curriculum development as special invitees in the Board of Studies.

Our University is a partner in the MHRD National Knowledge Network. Through UGC - Infonet, and Inflibnet a collection of physical and electronic resources is available. The Intellectual Property Rights Cell of Bharathiar University protects the rights of inventions of faculty and young researchers in the University. The DRDO-BU-Center for Life Sciences was established in Bharathiar University as a joint venture by DRDO, Ministry of Defence, Government of India, as an autonomous research institute to pursue basic and applied research.

Bharathiar University Centre for International Affairs (BU-CIA) facilitates admission of international students through study in India (MoU) and Indian Council for Cultural Relations (MEA). BU-CIA operates in liaison with the Association of Indian Universities, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, and Shastri Indo Canadian Institute.

With a dedicated team of faculty with vast experience in teaching and research and dedicated and experienced administrative members, the University has emerged as one of the strong pillars of higher education in this region.

A pass in UG Degree in any discipline of life sciences / Biological Sciences(Botany,Zoology,Biotechnology,Biochemistry,Microbiology,Genetics,Biomedical Genetics etc.); Bachelor's degree in Technology(Biotechnology / Biomedical Engineering); M.B.B.S / B.D.S/ B.V.Sc./ B.Pharm. from recognized institutions.

M.Phil. / Ph.D. in Biotechnology

Eligibility for MPhil: 

Candidates with a Master’s degree of Bharathiar University in the concerned or related discipline or any other qualification recognized as equivalent thereto by the Syndicate of Bharathiar University are eligible.

The candidates should have passed a post-graduate degree course either with SSLC + HSC + UG + PG (i.e., 10 + 2 + 3 + 2) or with 11-years SSLC + PUC + UG + PG (i.e., 11 + 1 + 3 + 2) or with 10-years SSLC + 3 years Diploma + 2 years UG degree + 2 years PG (i.e., 10 + 3 + 2 + 2) or with 10 years SSLC + HSC + 4 years UG degree and 1-year PG degree (i.e., 10 + 2 + 4 + 1). Thus, only the candidates possessing a PG degree with 17 years of total duration of study alone are eligible for admission to the M. Phil., programme.

Eligibility for Ph.D.:

M.Sc. Physics

Eligibility

A pass in B.Sc. Physics with Mathematics and Chemistry as Ancillary subjects.

M. Phil.

The department offers a regular M. Phil. program in Physics. The selected students who meet the prescribed eligibility and selection criteria can opt for the various specializations offered in the department. After the successful completion of Part-I exams, students will be trained to work on research problems. Upon successful completion of the thesis, students have to defend the work in a public viva-voce exam. Most of our students after completion of this course, join for Ph. D. program. Some of the students join as faculty members in arts and science colleges as well as in engineering colleges.

The selection will be made based on the marks obtained by the students upto V semester (if it is a semester  pattern)/II year of study their (if it is non- semester) of UG degree programme. In the UG degree programme in all subjects other than part l / ll Languages and subjects like General Knowledge, NSS, irrespective of the candidate appearing for 2022 examinations or already qualified for the award of degree shall be considered for
preparing the merit list.

FREE EDUCATION SCHEME

Free Education Scheme offered by the University enables free education to the poor and meritorious students. It is offered to one candidate from each department, admitted into various degree programmes of the University. The free education scheme is applicable only to the students whose parents income is less than Rs. 2.00 lakhs per annum.

RESERVATION NORMS AND FEE CONCESSION #

• Admission will be made strictly on the basis of the reservation policy of Government of Tamil Nadu.
• Students belong to Adi Dravidar, Tribal Community and Adi Dravidar converted to Christianity are exempted from paying the Tuition Fee under TNER - 92, Government of Tamil Nadu.
• 5% of the seats are reserved for Differently abled students in all the programmes and exempted from paying the Tuition fee and special fee for all categories of students with disabilities (on production of disability certificate)
